UC San Diego Unveils Triton Center as Campus's New Front Door; Alumni Center Grand Opening Set for Nov. 6-7
UC San Diego is showcasing Triton Center, a four-building complex billed as the campus's new "front door," bringing essential services, community spaces and cultural venues together for students, alumni and the wider campus community at 9500 Gilman Drive in La Jolla.
The Triton Health and Wellness Building, which opened on July 14, unites Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Promotion Services and the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry under one roof, offering integrated primary and urgent care, optometry, pharmacy and - for the first time - rehabilitation physical therapy for students.
This fall also brings "La asamblea del barro," the inaugural commission of the Stuart Collection's Emerging Artists Program: a towering work of 260 hand-painted ceramic symbols by Mexican artist duo RojoNegro (Maria Sosa and Noe Martinez) at the entrance to the Triton Administrative Services Building, exploring how knowledge is created, shared and interpreted. The Emerging Artists Program was launched by Stuart Collection director Jessica Berlanga Taylor after she took the helm of the collection.
Alumni Sandra Timmons '81 and Richard L. Sandstrom '72, PhD '79 gave $2 million in support of the Alumni and Welcome Center. With their support, the center's sixth-floor gathering space has been named in partnership with the Kumeyaay Nation "Enyawaap Nekaakap Mat Aayum" - a phrase in the Tipay Southern dialect meaning "We gather together in the circle."
The first-ever Triton Alumni and Welcome Center officially opens over Homecoming weekend with a two-day block party in Carlos Malamud Plaza, on November 6 (2-6 p.m.) and November 7 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), featuring live music, food trucks, family activities, alumni-owned business booths and giveaways. Admission is complimentary.
