The City of Culver City announced three free events during United Against Hate Week, October 18–24, a nationwide initiative against hate, bias and discrimination based on race, faith or religion, gender and other protected characteristics. The events are hosted by the city's Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC). On Wednesday, October 21, at the Senior Center, 4095 Overland Ave. (Rooms B45 and B47), "EHRAC Presents: Personal Stories of Resilience / Stories of Survival" runs 6:00–7:30 p.m., with speakers from different generations and identity backgrounds sharing personal experiences of resilience, hope and belonging; it is followed at the same venue, 7:30–9:00 p.m., by "Right to Be's Emotional Intelligence Workshop," on practicing empathy, care and connection, including understanding and managing one's own emotions and recognizing others' perspectives. On Friday, October 23, 6:00–7:30 p.m. (location to be announced), "2024 Hate Crimes Report: From Data to Action" will discuss the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations' 2024 Hate Crime Report. According to the announcement, the report shows hate crimes reached the second-highest level in more than 40 years of records; anti-Black, anti-Latino, anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim and anti-LGBTQ crimes all increased; and school-related hate crimes and crimes related to the Middle East conflict rose notably.
