Lake Austin Drawdown Begins Oct. 12: Water to Drop About 10 Feet Through Nov. 30 for Dock Repairs

The City of Austin and the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) announced that the planned Lake Austin drawdown officially began on Oct. 12 and will run through Nov. 30. The lake level will drop by roughly 10 feet, to a target range of about 481.8 to 482.8 feet, falling at roughly one foot per day and reaching the target in about three weeks.

Officials said the periodic drawdown gives shoreline property owners a window to repair private docks, bulkheads and boathouses, while the city's fire and parks departments carry out their own maintenance. Some repair work requires permits, and the city has set up a dedicated waiver application for minor dock repairs, with details on the city website.

During the drawdown, public boat ramps on the lake will be closed, and swimming is prohibited at Emma Long Park. The city advises shoreline residents to secure boats and floating structures in advance and warns of mud hazards on the exposed lakebed, urging people to keep children and pets away.

Lake Austin, a reservoir on the Colorado River impounded by Tom Miller Dam, serves water-supply, power-generation and recreation functions. A drawdown of this scale was last carried out several years ago; water levels are expected to return to normal in early December.

Drawdowns of this kind are scheduled every few years so that repairs requiring low water can be concentrated in a single window. The city advises owners to plan work and materials in advance so as not to miss it; dock contractors likewise urge early booking for small jobs, as schedules typically tighten late in the window.
