Hall and Woodford Win 2026 Economics Nobel for Work on Stabilising Economies

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced in Stockholm on October 12 that the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel goes to American economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.

Hall, 83, is a professor at Stanford University; Woodford, born in 1955, is a professor at Columbia University. They independently developed approaches that strengthened the theoretical foundations of modern policymaking. The prize committee said that, on the basis of these models, well-timed fiscal and monetary policy measures can reduce the economy's peaks and troughs.

The award, established by Sweden's central bank in 1968, carries 12 million Swedish kronor and will be presented alongside the Nobel Prizes on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. It closes this year's Nobel season, after the medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace prizes were announced last week.

The committee noted that the 1970s oil shocks exposed limits in then-current Keynesian models; Hall and Woodford's work links household and business decisions and expectations to wider outcomes, helping central banks and governments assess interest rates, spending and inflation.
