UNC Stuns No. 25 Pitt 21-17, Giving Belichick His First Win Over a Ranked Opponent
North Carolina upset No. 25 Pitt 21-17 on the road on October 10, earning head coach Bill Belichick his first win over a ranked opponent at UNC. Quarterback Billy Edwards completed 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard strike to Shaamar Earle in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory — his highest completion rate against a top opponent this season. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp led the team in receiving for the second straight week with 93 yards.
Pitt led 10-0 through three quarters before UNC's defense woke up, forcing failed fourth-down conversions on each of the Panthers' final three possessions to lock down the win. Derrick McDonald and Xavier Lewis each recorded 12 tackles to anchor the defense. UNC improved to 3-2 (1-1 ACC), while Pitt fell to 5-1.
The loss knocked Pitt out of the latest AP Top 25. Edwards has thrown for 1,069 yards and eight touchdowns this season and is finding his rhythm. UNC travels to face Duke next week, chasing its first Victory Bell trophy since 2023.
