Louisiana Begins Deploying $1.35 Billion in Federal Broadband Funding, Aims for Statewide High-Speed Access by 2028
According to a news release issued Oct. 8 by the office of U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, Louisiana has begun deploying $1.35 billion in federal broadband funding secured through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Cassidy played a key role in securing the funding, and Louisiana was the first state in the nation to receive federal approval to deploy it.
Gov. Jeff Landry recently announced that the state has begun the first substantive phase of improving broadband access in rural areas, with the goal of achieving statewide high-speed internet coverage by 2028. Cassidy said: "This is exactly why I fought to ensure Louisiana got this broadband funding. Now we are seeing the investment actually land, with real projects connecting Louisiana's homes, businesses, schools and communities."
The funding will primarily expand high-speed internet access to previously underserved rural communities. State officials say the projects will bring long-term improvements to remote learning for students, small-business operations and health-care services in remote areas.
