Pritzker Signs Executive Order Allowing Dyed Diesel on Roadways, May Extend Harvest Permits to 2027
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed an executive order and issued a statewide disaster proclamation allowing dyed diesel — normally restricted to agricultural use — to be used on highways through the end of the year, easing record diesel costs for farmers during harvest season. The order directs the Illinois Department of Revenue and the Illinois State Police to suspend penalties for vehicles using dyed diesel on roadways.
Pritzker also directed the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to consider extending the Illinois Harvest Permit program through summer 2027. The program allows higher truck weight limits on designated routes to help farmers move grain more efficiently. Illinois Farm Bureau officials say that on an 80-acre field at average state yields, using the harvest permit saves about two truckloads of hauling.
The order further asks state agencies to consider additional protections for farmers, giving the state more flexibility to respond to agricultural economic pressures amid volatile fuel markets. Illinois joins Missouri, Indiana and other Midwestern farm states in loosening restrictions on dyed diesel for highway use.
