Former Idaho Gubernatorial Candidate Ammon Bundy Arrested in Utah, Dragged from Vehicle After Refusing to Exit
Ammon Bundy, the anti-government activist who led the 2016 armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon and later ran for governor of Idaho, was arrested in southern Utah on Oct. 7 following a traffic stop.
According to Iron County Sheriff's Office records, at about 8:18 a.m. on Oct. 7, a deputy spotted Bundy driving a 2020 Ford F-250 pickup with no license plate at mile marker 43 on Interstate 15 and pulled him over. Bundy admitted the vehicle was unregistered, saying he had owned it for about two years; a records check also showed his Idaho driver's license had expired. Because the vehicle had no valid registration, the deputy ordered a tow and instructed Bundy to step out, which he refused. The deputy opened the door and ordered him out again; Bundy grabbed the steering wheel and refused to comply. Multiple officers dragged him from the vehicle, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him; on the way to the patrol car he refused to walk, dragging his feet, and was ultimately lifted into the vehicle.
Bundy was booked on four charges, including driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to obey an officer, obstructing an officer (a Class B misdemeanor) and driving without a valid license, and was later released on bail. Bundy had previously been temporarily barred from the Idaho statehouse after protesting pandemic measures at the Capitol.
