Detroit Lions Rout Cardinals 45-21 as Jahmyr Gibbs Passes Barry Sanders for NFL Record
The Detroit Lions defeated the Arizona Cardinals 45-21 on Sunday, October 11, in Week 5 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, improving to 3-2 heading into their bye week.
Detroit punted on each of its first three possessions and fell behind 7-0, then scored on seven straight drives — six touchdowns and a field goal — for 45 points.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs starred with 25 carries for 151 yards and two rushing touchdowns, plus five catches for 56 yards, totaling 207 yards from scrimmage. His third-quarter touchdown was the 58th of his career, passing Hall of Famer Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns in NFL history by a player under 25. After the game, the Lions shared a congratulatory message from Sanders to Gibbs.
Quarterback Jared Goff went 19-of-30 for 271 yards with three touchdown passes and a rushing score, his fifth straight turnover-free game. Tight end Sam LaPorta had five catches for a team-high 88 yards and a touchdown, including a crucial 12-yard catch on fourth down early in the second quarter that jumpstarted the offense and a 38-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1.
The defense recorded five sacks, including Aidan Hutchinson's takedown of Jacoby Brissett on fourth-and-1, and held Arizona to 56 rushing yards while forcing five straight drives without a first down, a first since 2022.
For the Cardinals, Brissett was 29-of-47 for 293 yards with three touchdowns and an interception; rookie Jeremiyah Love managed 22 yards on 12 carries. The win was a bounce-back after last week's prime-time loss to the Panthers. After the bye, Detroit hosts the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field on October 25. (Sources: Detroit Free Press, Lions Wire)
