Latin America Watches Brazil's Runoff: Mexico Plays Down the Stakes as Trump Hails a 'Big Victory'

The shockwaves from Brazil's first round spread across Latin America this week. In coverage published around October 12 by Australia's Green Left, the result — Flavio Bolsonaro on 47.03 percent of valid votes to Lula's 45.16 percent — drew immediate reactions from the region's progressive camp, with leaders speaking publicly about U.S. interference and continental sovereignty.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, asked at her daily press conference whether a Bolsonaro victory would leave Mexico without allies in Latin America, played down potential friction, saying it was necessary to wait for the final runoff result and that Mexico's main ally is the Mexican people. Former Colombian president Gustavo Petro criticized local right-wing rhetoric and denounced interference by the Trump administration in the region.

U.S. President Donald Trump was the most direct: he told the press the first round was a big victory — close, but very, very big. Flavio Bolsonaro is an open Trump ally, as was his father Jair. Analysts broadly agree that a Bolsonaro win on October 25 would increase U.S. influence in Latin America and put Brazil's trade relationship with China under fresh scrutiny, while a Lula reelection would keep Brasilia at arm's length from Washington and deepen ties with Beijing.

The runoff's outcome will shape China–Brazil trade and investment conditions. The October 25 vote is therefore not only a Brazilian domestic event but a bellwether for the regional order and for China–Brazil relations.
