Second Day of Nationwide Strike Partly Shuts Belgium's Public Sector
Belgium's public sector was partially shut down on Monday, 12 October 2026, as unions staged a second day of nationwide strike action against planned government budget cuts, amid mounting political pressure on Prime Minister Bart De Wever over a stalled budget agreement. No large-scale demonstration was planned in the capital that day; the strike itself was the action.
Rail and public transport were hit first. The rail strike began at 22:00 on Sunday evening and ran until the last train on Monday. National operator SNCB/NMBS ran a reduced timetable: about seven in ten intercity trains, half of local and suburban services, and only one in five peak-hour trains. Flemish operator De Lijn reported around 39 percent of its vehicles off the road. Public broadcasting, schools and waste collection were also affected.
The immediate background was the weekend's failed budget negotiation. The prime minister's office said coalition partners had failed to reach agreement on a new federal budget, forcing De Wever to cancel his planned State of the Union address to parliament on Tuesday while talks continue. Belgian media reported the deal could slip to late October or early November, straining the coalition's cohesion.
The action was organised mainly through public-service unions, which argue that workers are shouldering the burden of austerity while public services deteriorate, and which demand fairer taxation of wealth. Brussels Airport expected flights to operate normally, but surface access to the terminal was much harder.
