Alabama Falls to Georgia for First Loss of Season, Holds at No. 6 in Rare Post-Loss Stand
The University of Alabama fell 17-20 at home to the University of Georgia on October 10, suffering its first loss of the season, with a late-game penalty proving the turning point. With 2:19 remaining, sophomore cornerback Dijon Lee Jr. shoved and struck the face of a Georgia star receiver after a second-down play, drawing a personal foul that handed the Bulldogs a first down; Georgia then knelt out the clock.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer screamed at Lee Jr. on the sideline for several seconds, with ESPN cameras catching him yelling "you cost us the game." Afterward DeBoer said the team preaches "emotional maturity," and this time it failed. Lee Jr. declined postgame interviews and deleted his social media accounts.
Despite the loss, Alabama held at No. 6 in the October 11 Associated Press poll — the first time since 1988 the program has not dropped in the rankings after a defeat. The game also featured a controversial moment: an apparent pass interference by a Georgia safety on an Alabama receiver in the closing minutes went uncalled, prompting home fans to throw debris onto the field, and Georgia players were asked to leave wearing their helmets. Alabama travels to Tennessee next week.
