Hurricane Simon Strengthens to Category 4, Barrels Toward Mexico's Pacific Coast; Landfall Expected Sunday Near Manzanillo-Puerto Vallarta
Hurricane Simon continued to rapidly intensify off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday, becoming a Category 4 major hurricane, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Its maximum sustained winds reached 150 to 155 mph (about 240 kph), just one step below Category 5. The storm's center was located about 115 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, crawling northward at roughly 5 mph, and was expected to make landfall on Sunday at major hurricane strength along Mexico's west-central coast. GSM reported Simon's intensification on Oct. 10; this story covers its Category 4 status and landfall preparations.
The NHC expects landfall between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, with the latest forecast pointing to the Jalisco coast between La Huerta and Tomatlán. A hurricane warning stretches from Punta San Telmo in Michoacán to Punta Mita in Nayarit, covering the offshore Islas Marías.
The primary threats are torrential rain and storm surge. The NHC forecast rainfall of 250 to 500 millimeters across southwestern Mexico, with isolated totals up to 750 millimeters or more in parts of Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit. Catastrophic wind and life-threatening storm surge impacts are likely along a portion of the west-central coast, the center warned, with the rains producing life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
Mexico's civil protection agency announced that, starting 4 p.m. Saturday, Puerto Vallarta and parts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Nayarit would suspend non-essential activities and travel, urging residents to stay home or in temporary shelters. The Mexican Navy activated emergency personnel in Colima and restricted maritime traffic along parts of the Pacific coast. Manzanillo, Mexico's busiest Pacific port, main gateway for trade with Asia and home to a key LNG import terminal, faces the storm directly.
Simon has already caused damage: heavy rain knocked out power in parts of Guerrero earlier this week, with the federal utility CFE saying about 90% of affected customers had power restored by Friday. Meteorologists note the abnormally fast intensification is exactly what makes such storms dangerous — it sharply compresses the time coastal communities have to prepare.
