COLUMBIA — Authorities in South Carolina's Upstate confirmed one weather-related death in Greenwood County as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias moved northeast, according to Central Florida Public Media's October 11 by-the-numbers summary and USA Today's aftermath reporting. The death brought Isaias's confirmed toll across Florida, Alabama and South Carolina to five.
Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on the night of October 9 as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds near 105 mph, the first hurricane to strike the United States in two years. Its effects reached far beyond the landfall point, with tornado and flooding reports extending toward the mid-Atlantic and heavy rain in the western Carolinas, where some western North Carolina stations recorded 9.57 inches. As the post-tropical cyclone moved northeast on October 10-11 and the National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory, inland flash-flood risks lingered.
South Carolina had prepared under a gubernatorial emergency declaration issued ahead of the storm. This October 11 follow-up records the state's confirmed loss — the Greenwood County death — and the continuing cleanup in the Upstate.
