Rachel's Remnants Soak Las Vegas: Record 1.08 Inches at the Airport, Roads Flooded and Closed

LAS VEGAS — Moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel pushed deep into the Mojave Desert on October 11, triggering flash flooding across the Las Vegas Valley, according to National Weather Service Las Vegas warnings and local reporting. Harry Reid International Airport measured 1.08 inches of rain, breaking the station's daily record, while gauges in the western and northwestern valley topped 2.5 inches. The Weather Service issued a morning flash flood warning for west-central Clark County, including the Las Vegas Strip area, with radar-estimated totals of roughly 1.5 to 3 inches in the warned area.

Water quickly covered roads. Local traffic and media reports said Primm Boulevard at Interstate 15 near the California state line was closed in all lanes; flooding and debris blocked roads around East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and at Winnick Avenue; drivers were stranded in standing water on the 215 at Charleston Boulevard; and firefighters carried out repeated swift-water rescues. Water also rushed through streets near the LINQ Promenade on the Strip corridor.

Forecasters reminded residents that desert soil and paved surfaces absorb almost nothing, so intense rain can fill washes and low crossings within minutes, and drivers should never enter flooded roads. For Nevada, it was the state's top story on October 11: the remnants of a tropical system delivered one of the driest big cities in America its wettest day in more than seven years. A flood watch ran into Monday morning before drier weather returned.
