Threatening Neighbors or Exposing Private Info in California Can Lead to Charges: Two Authoritative Legal Guides Draw the Line
The following is reposted information.
Repost 1: California Courts official guide, "Civil Harassment Restraining Orders in California"

A Civil Harassment Restraining Order is designed for people with no close relationship and who are not close family members — typically neighbors, roommates, landlords, or coworkers. You may apply if the other party has harassed, threatened, harmed, or stalked you, including conduct that takes place online. A court can order the restrained person to stay away and have no contact; violating the order is a crime.

- Criminal threats (California Penal Code 422): willfully threatening to kill or seriously injure another person, intending the threat to be taken seriously, is a crime — whether made in person, by letter, text, or online post — punishable by up to one year in jail.
- Stalking (Penal Code 646.9): willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly following or harassing someone while making a credible threat that puts them in fear for their or their family's safety, punishable by up to one year in jail; victims may also sue for civil damages (Civil Code 1708.7).
- Hate crimes (Penal Code 422.6): interfering with another person's legal rights by force or threat of force because of their race, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristic, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine or one year in jail, plus court-ordered community service.
