Idaho U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis Announces Retirement Effective Oct. 17
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Idaho has announced that U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis will retire effective October 17, 2026, closing out his career at the helm of federal law enforcement in Idaho.
"I am unable to overstate the privilege it has been to work with the dedicated and remarkable women and men of the U.S. Attorney's Office," Davis said in a statement. "These great lawyers and support staff faithfully enforce the law, work to keep Idaho and our country safe, support our law enforcement partners, and protect the civil rights of others. I am proud of the work they do every day."
As the top-ranking federal law enforcement official in Idaho, Davis held prosecutorial responsibility over 44 counties encompassing more than 83,000 square miles and a population of nearly 1.5 million. He led three staffed offices in Boise, Coeur d'Alene and Pocatello with 65 employees, including 33 attorneys. The office prosecutes federal crimes in the district — including immigration, terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation, firearms and narcotics cases — defends the United States in civil cases, and collects debts owed to the government.
Under his leadership, the office filed 298 criminal cases charging 337 defendants in the past year, including approximately 103 drug trafficking cases, 89 violent crime cases, 69 immigration cases and 22 fraud cases. Notable results include the trial conviction and 30-year sentence of Juan Carlos Delfin for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, a five-year prison sentence for a man who used a deceased child's identity for 25 years to commit identity theft, wire fraud and theft of government funds, and a 210-month sentence for Shone Jem Bache for sexual abuse of a child. The office also filed or defended 355 civil cases and collected $9.2 million owed to the government from civil and criminal judgments.
Davis hired 12 federal employees during his second term, including six Assistant U.S. Attorneys, and 26 during his first term; more than half of the office's current employees were hired by Davis across his two terms.
His career spans both the legislature and law enforcement. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, and raised in Idaho Falls, Davis served 19 years in the Idaho State Senate, including 15 years as Majority Leader. He was nominated by President Donald J. Trump on March 31, 2025, and confirmed by the Senate on October 7, 2025, having previously served as U.S. Attorney from September 21, 2017, to February 28, 2021, during Trump's first term. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978 and the University of Idaho College of Law in 1980, and recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Marion. They have six children and 14 grandchildren.
Davis thanked Senators Michael D. Crapo and James E. Risch for their confidence and President Trump for the opportunity to return as Idaho's U.S. Attorney. His departure leaves a vacancy at the top of Idaho's federal law enforcement apparatus, with a successor to be nominated by the White House and confirmed by the Senate.
