Northwest Iowa Soybean Harvest Rolls On While Corn Harvest Stalls After Wet Weather
After weeks of autumn rain finally ended and fields became accessible again, farmers across northwest Iowa are racing through a dry, warm weather window. Most producers have just wrapped up their first full week of the harvest: soybean harvest is progressing well, while corn harvest has ground to a near standstill after the wet stretch.
Gentry Sorenson, an agronomist with Iowa State University Extension, says most producers in the region are concentrating on one crop at a time. Soybean moisture levels are running around 10 to 11 percent and continuing to fall — a safe level for storage — though he has heard scattered reports of soybean quality issues.
Corn harvest, by contrast, is largely stalled. Sorenson says persistent wet conditions in late September and early October left fields too muddy for combines, bringing corn harvest activity to a standstill across much of northwest Iowa, and farmers are doing their best to make up for time lost to rain.
Iowa is one of the nation's top corn and soybean producers, so the pace of its fall harvest carries weight for U.S. grain supplies and commodity prices. Agronomists advise growers to prioritize mature soybeans while field conditions allow, and to keep a close eye on corn moisture to avoid further losses from lodging and mold.
