Mayor Wu Welcomes 20 New EMT Graduates at Faneuil Hall as 911 Demand Grows
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu joined Boston Emergency Medical Services (Boston EMS) and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) on October 10 at historic Faneuil Hall to celebrate the graduation of 20 new EMTs from the Boston EMS Recruit Academy, and to recognize 12 EMS members promoted to new roles.
"Today, we're welcoming 20 new EMTs to Boston EMS and honoring those who have been promoted into new leadership roles," Wu said at the ceremony. "Every day, the skill, professionalism, and compassion of Boston EMS make a difference in every neighborhood across our city. We're proud to welcome this new class and celebrate the important role of Boston EMS in serving the people of Boston."
Boston EMS Chief James Hooley said graduating from the Recruit Academy is an important accomplishment: "You've spent months learning how to assess patients, make critical decisions, work as a team, and remain focused in some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable. Today, you join a department with a long tradition of excellence and a responsibility to be there for people when they need us most."
According to the city, the new graduates completed intensive prehospital-care training and will directly strengthen the city's 911 ambulance and dispatch services amid growing demand for emergency calls. In recent years, downtown safety surveys have shown rising resident concern about public safety, making EMS response capacity a key part of city services.
According to the city press release (distributed October 10 via EIN News), the graduation and promotion ceremony is part of Boston EMS's annual workforce replenishment plan. The city said it will continue investing in EMS training and equipment to keep response times strong through extreme weather, major events and everyday emergency demand.
