Treasury Brings In Former Fed Nominee Judy Shelton as Currency Adviser Focused on China

The U.S. Treasury Department said on October 9 that Secretary Scott Bessent has hired economist Judy Shelton as an adviser on currency policy, with a particular focus on evaluating financial conditions in China. The role does not require Senate confirmation. Shelton was nominated to the Federal Reserve Board during President Trump's first term, but her nomination stalled amid bipartisan concerns — including her support for a gold standard — that she could threaten the Fed's independence.

Treasury said Shelton will advise Bessent on currency policy, drawing on a career that includes leading the U.S. delegation at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the National Endowment for Democracy, plus fellowships at Stanford's Hoover Institution. The appointment places a prominent critic of the central bank inside the administration's economic team as Washington reassesses trade and financial ties with Beijing.
