Riyadh Airport Attack Toll Revised to 12 Dead, 309 Wounded Including One American; Projectile Falls Near Dammam Airport

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) confirmed Sunday that Saturday's Houthi missile attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 12 people and wounded 309 — a sharp upward revision of the casualty toll. Among the dead were one American citizen, four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, and one citizen each of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Sudan. Officials briefed on the matter warned the death and injury counts may not be final.

It was the third attack on the airport this week. Missiles scored direct hits on Terminals 3 and 4, with parts of the roof collapsing on people inside. The strike came without warning — Saudi Arabia's threat warning system issued no alert. The wounded were evacuated to hospitals by ambulance and helicopter, some in critical condition. Operations at the kingdom's busiest airport, serving a capital of about 8 million people, were temporarily suspended with all flights diverted, and Western governments told citizens to avoid the area.

Notably, a second Saudi airport has also been hit. The Saudi-led international coalition fighting in Yemen wrote on X that a "projectile" fell near Dammam's international airport, hours after officials acknowledged the Riyadh attack. Dammam had been the main alternate field after Riyadh's closure.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday's strike, though Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis claimed the two earlier attacks this week. After the attack, the Houthi military spokesperson retweeted his own pre-attack post saying only pre-approved humanitarian flights were allowed to land at Riyadh airport, adding the words: "a reminder."

The spate of deadly strikes has exposed vulnerabilities in the kingdom's defenses as it wages an air campaign against the Houthis in support of a ground war by Yemen's government against the Iran-backed group. The Saudi government's media office did not immediately respond to questions.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters outside the White House on Saturday, was asked whether Washington planned to join Saudi strikes on the Houthis. "We may. We're going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we'll make a decision. We move very quickly," he said. (Compiled from CNN, The Wall Street Journal and New York Post reporting; rewritten by GSM)
