South African Jurist Navi Pillay Wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on October 9 that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to South African jurist Navi Pillay, honoring her efforts to promote peace and international law. The committee said Pillay, with exceptional courage and integrity, has led the way toward a more comprehensive global legal order and has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted. UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised her as a champion of international law and human rights.
Pillay, 85, was born in apartheid-era South Africa and began her career defending anti-apartheid activists. She went on to serve as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a judge on the International Criminal Court, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She learned of the prize while attending a conference in Nuremberg, Germany — site of the postwar Nazi trials — and joked that if the applause grew louder she might share the prize with President Trump.
