Danny Fire
Danny Fire nearly out: containment reaches 96%, patrol status, all evacuations lifted, unified command ends
GORMAN — The Danny Fire, which burned for two days alongside Interstate 5, was nearly extinguished by Saturday evening, Oct. 10. Incident command announced the fire remains at 150 acres with containment jumping from 72% to 96%, and the fire is now in patrol status. All evacuations have been lifted, and the unified command with the Los Angeles County Fire Department ended Saturday.
The blaze broke out around 4:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in light to medium brush north of Smokey Bear Road, south of Gorman, spreading at a moderate-to-fast rate that forced the closure of both directions of I-5 through the Grapevine and triggered evacuation warnings and orders for multiple zones around Gorman. Firefighters stopped the fire's forward progress by about 7:11 p.m. Thursday, and containment climbed steadily afterward.
According to Angeles National Forest headquarters, the fire was fought by U.S. Forest Service crews assigned to six national forests — Angeles, Cleveland, Lassen, Los Padres, San Bernardino and Shasta-Trinity — along with engine crews and equipment from Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Idaho. The cause remains under investigation.
I-5 has fully reopened. Officials cautioned that while the fire is in patrol status, crews are still mopping up residual hot spots, and drivers through the Grapevine should watch for fire equipment working along the roadside.
