Curitiba School Hostage Crisis Ends: Gunman Holding 13 Children Shot by Police, All Hostages Freed
A school hostage crisis unfolded in Curitiba, capital of the southern state of Parana, on October 10. According to the Brazil weekly threat assessment published by security-briefing service GeoBit, an armed man barricaded himself inside a school holding 13 children hostage, reportedly using fuel and threatening arson. Police fatally shot the man during the operation, and all 13 hostages were released.
Details remain under verification: the briefing listed the incident among a week of criminal-justice operations across Brazil and stated that the subject was shot by police and the children freed. Curitiba is one of Brazil's wealthiest state capitals, and an attack of this kind at a school is highly unusual there, which drew national attention.
The incident came in the middle of a presidential runoff campaign in which public safety is a central issue: Flavio Bolsonaro is running on a tough-on-crime platform, while at an October 11 rally in Sao Paulo, President Lula promised to redouble federal efforts on public safety with direct federal involvement in policing. A school siege is certain to push security higher up the agenda in the runoff's final two weeks.
According to the briefing, this report currently rests mainly on a single risk-briefing source, and the gunman's identity and motive await confirmation in the official police bulletin.
