GSM News

Wyoming Extends Drought Emergency to Keep Hay Moving

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon has signed Executive Order 2026-008, extending Executive Order 2026-006 so that oversize and overweight trucks hauling livestock feed and livestock can continue to obtain emergency relief permits. The order cites the extensive drought, high heat, low humidity and wildfire that swept the state through the spring and summer of 2026, depleting pastures and native forage and forcing ranchers to truck in hay. The new order takes effect seamlessly when the prior one lapses, remaining in force until November 6, 2026; permits are handled through the governor's website and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). In a ranching state, feed logistics decide whether herds make it through the winter, and the costs eventually show up in beef and dairy prices and in ranch operating budgets. For Chinese-American residents of ranching country, the practical point is immediate: with hauling unconstrained, ranchers are not forced into distress sales before winter, and local meat supply and prices stay steadier. By keeping the emergency hauling lane open into early winter, the state is signaling that it expects the combined drought-and-fire impact to linger. (Source: Office of the Governor of Wyoming)
