USDA Issues Hurricane Isaias Preparedness Guide With Aid Channels
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on October 9 urged farmers, ranchers, families and small businesses in the path of Hurricane Isaias to prepare now, saying its regional, state and county personnel stand ready to help. On food safety: a closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours during an outage, a full freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if half full), and 50 pounds of dry ice can keep an 18-cubic-foot freezer cold for 2 more days; the Meat and Poultry Hotline is 1-888-674-6854 (weekdays 10 a.m.–6 p.m. ET). For pets and livestock, USDA advises planning evacuation routes and shelter in advance, and contacting the receiving state's State Veterinarian's Office before moving animals across state lines. Producers with federal crop insurance or NAP coverage should report losses to their insurance agent or local FSA office within 72 hours of discovering damage, with a written follow-up within 15 days. USDA also listed recovery channels — livestock indemnity and emergency livestock, honeybee and orchard assistance, emergency conservation and forest restoration programs, and low-interest FSA emergency loans — available through local USDA Service Centers and at farmers.gov and the USDA Disaster Resource Center. USDA will also work with FEMA to support emergency nutrition assistance. Chinese American families and farm operators in affected areas of Florida, Georgia and Alabama can use these channels to prepare and to file promptly after the storm.
