All Eyes on October 14: Markets Expect MAS to Tighten Monetary Policy Again on Strong Growth and Inflation Risks
SINGAPORE — Singapore is expected to tighten monetary policy at its scheduled review on Wednesday, October 14, as robust growth and inflation risks bolster the case for another move. All 10 analysts polled by Reuters expect the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to tighten policy on October 14. The MAS surprised markets in July by 'very slightly' tightening policy, adding to a policy move in April this year.
Singapore manages monetary conditions differently from most economies: instead of setting interest rates, the MAS lets the Singapore dollar rise or fall against the currencies of its main trading partners within an undisclosed band — the Singapore dollar nominal effective exchange rate, or S$NEER — adjusting the slope, mid-point and width of the band. Barclays economist Brian Tan expects the central bank to again raise the slope by a slight 25 basis points, as 'the sheer magnitude of the AI boom' drives relatively robust GDP growth heading into 2027. However, the translation of growth into inflation has likely proved milder than the MAS expected, which will probably continue to restrain a more aggressive pace of tightening, he said.
The risks are largely external. The Middle East conflict has caused significant uncertainty, with oil prices rising even as talks continue between Iran and the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections. OCBC economist Selena Ling said there is upside risk to core inflation as a widening conflict threatens to broaden sticky price pressures across goods and services, while the threat of a 'super El Niño' could further drive up food costs. The weather pattern has the potential to cause floods, droughts, extreme heat and crop losses worldwide, and is expected to peak by early 2027.
For local households, a tightening MAS points to a firmer Singapore dollar — cheaper outbound travel and imports, but more pressure on exporters and tourism competitiveness — while mortgage and business borrowing costs still hinge on the global rate environment. The October 14 statement is the biggest policy event of the month for Singapore's economy.
