Rhode Island Reports Fifth Straight Year of Math Gains

Rhode Island on October 9 released its annual academic assessment and accountability results in a combined report for the first time. Governor Dan McKee and Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green announced that RICAS math proficiency rose 0.4 percentage points to 31.8 percent — a fifth consecutive year of improvement, above pre-pandemic levels — while English language arts (ELA) slipped 0.6 points to 33.1 percent and NGSA science reached 31.1 percent, up from 30.8 percent in 2025. Chronic absenteeism fell another 2.4 percentage points in 2025-26 and is now down 14.4 points from its pandemic peak, with the state's Attendance Matters RI campaign restoring more than 4.4 million hours of class time. The proficiency gap with Massachusetts has narrowed sharply: ELA from 17.3 to 6.9 percentage points and math from 20.4 to 9.3. Fifty-six percent of schools earned three stars or higher, seven CSI schools exited improvement status, and graduates earning industry CTE credentials are up 293 percent since 2018. For Chinese-American parents who weigh schools carefully, the figures show a state pushing on both attendance and basics while still chasing its stronger neighbor.
