Oklahoma: Lambda to Build Data Center in Mayes County, Projecting $500 Million in Taxes Over a Decade
Lambda, a San Jose, California-based artificial intelligence cloud company, announced on September 27 that it will build a new data center at MidAmerica Industrial Park in Mayes County, Oklahoma. The company estimates the project will pay about $500 million in taxes over the next decade at current rates, create up to 1,000 construction jobs and up to 100 permanent positions. Under Oklahoma's Data Center Customer Ratepayer Protection Act, Lambda will cover 100 percent of the facility's energy and infrastructure costs rather than passing them to residential customers, and will use closed-loop cooling technology to minimize water use. Governor Kevin Stitt and the state commerce chief welcomed the project as a vote of confidence in Oklahoma's workforce and business climate, while the mayor of nearby Chouteau and local school officials pointed to expected benefits for schools and public services funded by the new tax revenue. The industrial park said local contractors and suppliers should also see opportunities once construction begins.
