Ohio: Bayer to Invest $2.2 Billion in New Pharma Plant, Creating About 600 High-Value Jobs
Ohio has landed another major investment. On October 2, Governor Mike DeWine joined German pharmaceutical giant Bayer and JobsOhio, the state's economic development arm, to announce that Bayer plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the New Albany International Business Park near Columbus. The project is expected to create around 600 high-value jobs, plus roughly 1,500 construction jobs during the build-out. The flexible, modular campus will combine drug substance and drug product manufacturing, using advanced digital and automation technologies, and will support Bayer's growing portfolio in oncology, cardiovascular and renal care. The first module, dedicated to drug substance manufacturing, is expected to become operational in 2031, with a drug product module to follow in 2034. Bayer has spent more than $7 billion on U.S. pharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing over the past five years, and the United States is its largest pharmaceutical market. To build the workforce, JobsOhio is investing up to $30 million in the Ohio Life Science Training Center, now under construction and scheduled to open in the summer of 2027, alongside nearly $8 million from the City of New Albany, the State of Ohio and The New Albany Company. For Chinese professionals in Ohio's pharmaceutical and engineering sectors, the continued growth of the Columbus region's life sciences cluster means more high-paying job opportunities close to home.
