New Mexico Partners with Fujitsu on Quantum Computing Research Center

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced on October 8 that Japanese technology company Fujitsu will partner with the state to establish a quantum computing research center in New Mexico. The governor's office said the center will conduct research in quantum hardware, software, algorithms and theory, support education and workforce development, and collaborate with the Quantum New Mexico Institute at the University of New Mexico on algorithms, applications and systems research. The partnership grew out of the governor's trade mission to Japan and extends Fujitsu's existing collaboration with New Mexico State University around the FUJITSU-MONAKA processor. State officials say New Mexico has invested more than $450 million in quantum infrastructure since 2019; the 35,000-square-foot Roadrunner Quantum Lab in Albuquerque opened last month, with Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories as inaugural tenants. The governor's office has not yet announced the new center's location, investment amount or job count. For Chinese-American researchers and engineers, the project signals new jobs and collaboration opportunities as the quantum industry spreads into the Southwest.
