New Hampshire Receives Over $2 Million in Federal Grants for the 988 Lifeline and Maternal Mental Health
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced on September 21 that the state has received more than $2 million in federal grants to strengthen the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and expand maternal mental health and substance-use services. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is providing about $1.2 million over three years to support 988 call, text and chat capacity — the lifeline handled more than 54,000 contacts in New Hampshire last year — while the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is providing about $1.4 million over two years to expand maternal screening, treatment and referral, including a perinatal psychiatry consultation line and the NH Mom Hub support network. Governor Kelly Ayotte and DHHS Commissioner Lori Weaver said the funding will help more residents get support at the moment of crisis. The 988 Lifeline is free and available 24 hours a day: dialing or texting 988 connects callers with trained counselors, with language services available. Chinese-American residents facing an emotional crisis — their own or a family member's — can call 988 anytime, and expectant families can ask their prenatal care providers about the expanded screening and referral services.
