Nebraska Governor Declares Emergency After Record Rainfall and Flooding in the Southeast
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen declared a state of emergency on October 2 after record-breaking rainfall and flooding struck the southeastern part of the state. The deluge inundated roads across the region, and stranded motorists had to be rescued from floodwaters. Pillen toured damage in northern Lancaster County and signed the emergency proclamation, activating state resources for response and recovery. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating damage assessments with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to determine what assistance may be available to affected individuals and businesses. The governor urged residents not to drive through flooded roads and to follow official road-closure and safety updates. Lancaster County, home to the capital city of Lincoln, saw record rainfall, and damage to farmland and low-lying communities is still being tallied. Chinese-American residents in southeastern Nebraska whose homes or businesses were damaged should watch for aid application announcements from the state and FEMA, and keep photos and receipts documenting their losses.
