Mississippi Deploys $8.5 Million Federal Grant for Short-Term Workforce Training at All 15 Community Colleges
The Office of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced on September 23 that the state will deploy more than $8.5 million from a federal Department of Labor Strengthening Community Colleges grant to expand short-term workforce training. All 15 of Mississippi's community colleges will take part, with Northwest Mississippi Community College as the lead institution and the state's workforce coordinating body, AccelerateMS, overseeing the effort. The initiative aims to launch at least 19 short-term training programs serving more than 1,500 participants. Courses are aligned with the state's industry needs — advanced manufacturing, shipbuilding, construction, information infrastructure and health care — and are designed as short, weeks-to-months certificate pathways that move students quickly into jobs or help current workers upgrade their skills. Governor Reeves said the investment brings training opportunities to communities across Mississippi so more residents can qualify for high-demand jobs. For Chinese-American residents, the low-cost, flexible-entry short courses at local community colleges offer a practical route into manufacturing, health care and the building trades; interested readers can contact their nearest college for schedules and funding eligibility.
