GSM News

Illinois Woman Sentenced to 31 Months for Role in Online Monkey-Abuse Videos

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Oct. 9 that Amanda Leigh Fourez of Catlin, Illinois, has been sentenced in federal court to 31 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for her role in online videos depicting extreme abuse of monkeys.

According to the Justice Department, Fourez participated in online groups that produced and distributed imagery of extreme animal abuse. So-called "crush" videos are covered by federal law, which prohibits creating and distributing depictions of animal crushing and abuse. The case was prosecuted under federal animal-crush laws.

In addition to the prison term, the three years of supervised release means Fourez must comply with court-imposed conditions after her release, and violations can send her back to prison. The federal system has no parole, so offenders generally serve most of their sentence.

The Justice Department has continued to pursue cross-state and online animal-abuse networks in recent years. Producing, forwarding, or paying to view such material can all be crimes. Readers who encounter such content in group chats or on social platforms should not repost it and can report it to the platform instead.
