Missouri Releases New State Energy Plan Centered on Nuclear Power and In-State Generation
Missouri has set the direction of its energy future for the next two decades. On September 30, Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources released the new Missouri State Energy Plan, built on four pillars: energy independence, nuclear enablement, economic growth and reliability. Over the past decade, the plan notes, Missouri has shifted from a net exporter of electricity to a net importer, relying on other states for more than 15% of its power in 2025 — even as older dispatchable plants retire and demand surges from new loads such as AI data centers. The plan identifies nuclear power as the only baseload option that is both available on demand and carbon-free, and proposes supporting policies: authorizing the state's Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority to make loans for nuclear projects, evaluating a Missouri Nuclear Power Authority, converting the Renewable Energy Standard into an Advanced Energy Standard, establishing ratepayer protections tied to limited cost recovery, and creating a competitive grant program to build the nuclear workforce. The Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force, established by executive order, will guide implementation. For Chinese families in Missouri, the state's energy choices will shape future electricity bills and job opportunities alike. (Source: Office of the Governor of Missouri)
