Stocks Rebound Friday to Weekly Gains After OpenAI Revenue Flap Rattles AI Shares; SpaceX Spectrum Deal Sinks Telecoms
US stocks closed higher Friday (Oct. 9): the Dow rose 423.31 points (+0.83%) to 51,654.95, the S&P 500 gained 0.59% to 7,811.54 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.64% to 27,366.17. For the week, the S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq rose 1.2%, 0.9% and 0.6% respectively, with the Nasdaq posting its fourth straight weekly gain.
The rebound followed a sharp Thursday selloff. The Financial Times reported that OpenAI's annualized revenue approached $50 billion at the end of September — about $20 billion below the widely circulated $70 billion figure — sending AI stocks lower: the Nasdaq fell 1.25% Thursday, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.39%, Nvidia slid 2.9% and Oracle about 5.5%. The gap was largely accounting: the $70 billion figure included revenue routed through cloud partners (the method rival Anthropic uses), which OpenAI does not count. Bloomberg reported Friday that OpenAI expects annualized net revenue of $70 billion by year-end, helping sentiment recover.
In single stocks, SpaceX announced late Thursday it would acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio to pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major US mobile carrier. T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon sank 8.5% to 13% on Friday — the S&P 500's three biggest decliners — while tower operators surged 7% to 16%. Health insurer Humana soared 11% after announcing improved Medicare Advantage star ratings for 2027. (Sources: CNBC quotes, Investopedia, Bloomberg, Financial Times)
