Louisiana Puts $100 Million Behind Fortified Roofs in 2026 to Ease Hurricane Insurance Costs

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple announced on September 21 that the state's 2026 investment in storm-resistant "Fortified" roof projects has reached $100 million. The newest piece, $20 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will go to the state Office of Community Development's Restore ROOF program to strengthen homes and reduce long-term disaster risk. The balance includes $50 million in remaining Hurricane Katrina and Rita bond funds approved by the Legislature and roughly $30 million a year in projected taxes and fees collected by the Department of Insurance. The department's Fortify Homes Program offers grants of up to $10,000 to help eligible homeowners upgrade roofs to the industry FORTIFIED standard; more than 5,500 grants have been approved and over 2,400 are pending. Officials say homeowners with fortified roofs are seeing premiums fall by an average of about 22 percent, saving roughly $1,250 a year. Starting in January 2027, insurers must also provide set benchmark discounts on the hurricane portion of premiums for fortified homes, reaching as high as 49 percent in south Louisiana.
