California Tax Credits Go to 35 Film Projects, Including 'Last Friday' and 'Michael 2'
California's governor's office announced on Oct. 7 the latest round of state film and television tax credits: 35 projects, led by independent films and several returning franchises. New Line Cinema's 'Last Friday' and Lionsgate's 'Michael 2' are on the list, along with revivals tied to 'Clueless' and 'The Rockford Files' and projects from Warner Bros. and Pixar.
The California Film Commission estimates the slate will generate $1.08 billion in direct production spending in the state, including $635 million in qualified spending and $423 million in qualified wages. It is expected to support 5,453 cast and crew jobs and 24,842 background performer workdays — roughly 30,000 jobs in all — across 1,049 shooting days.
'Last Friday' star and producer Ice Cube said keeping the South Los Angeles story in Southern California, with more than 180 local cast and crew, is exactly what the state incentive is for. Since July 2025, California's production tax credit program has driven a cumulative $7.2 billion in production spending.
