Arizona Allocates $16.47 Million in ARPA Funds to Offset Cuts to Three Public Universities

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs announced on September 29 that the state will allocate federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to offset a one-time $16,474,100 reduction to Arizona's three public universities included in the FY 2027 state budget. The reduction came from a one-time 2.5% cut to each university's operating lump sum appropriation. Under the allocation announced by the Governor's Office, Arizona State University (ASU) will receive $8,096,000, Northern Arizona University (NAU) will receive $2,624,500, the University of Arizona main campus will receive $4,725,900, and the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center will receive $1,027,700. The Governor's Office said the ARPA allocation fully offsets the one-time reduction, so the universities will not have to cut operational funding needed to educate students. In a statement, Hobbs said Arizona's universities are the engine of the state's economic development and that she will support state universities in having the resources to prepare students and supply employers with a high-skilled workforce.
