Nobel Literature Prize Announced in Stockholm: Canadian Poet Anne Carson Honoured for Reinventing Classical Forms
On Thursday, October 8, the Swedish Academy announced at the Stock Exchange Building in Stockholm's Old Town that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature had been awarded to Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson. The Academy's citation praised her "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor.
Carson, 76, was born in Toronto in 1950, holds a doctorate in classical languages, and has taught at McGill University, the University of Michigan and Princeton. She was in Iceland when the news arrived; the Academy's permanent secretary, Ingrid Carlberg, said the call had surprised Carson, who told her she had been listening to the wind.
Carson is the second Canadian to receive the literature prize, after Alice Munro in 2013. Her best-known works include Autobiography of Red (1998), a verse novel that recasts the Greek mythological figure Geryon in a modern coming-of-age story; Grief Lessons (2006), her translations of four tragedies by Euripides; and Float (2016), a set of 22 booklets that can be read in any order. The Academy noted that her translations of Greek classics are creative works in their own right, and highlighted her collaborations with visual artists, choreographers and opera and theatre directors.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is decided by the Swedish Academy and has been awarded since 1901. This year's Nobel Prizes will be presented in Stockholm on December 10.
