USDA Urges Ranchers to Put New Grazing Directive to Work on Federal Lands
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Oct. 8 wrote to ranchers holding grazing permits on U.S. Forest Service allotments, urging them to put the June 12, 2026 Grazing Directive to work. The directive builds on the October 2025 Plan to Fortify the American Beef Industry and a March 31, 2026 memorandum signed with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. The Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management administer about 240 million acres across 28 states for more than 23,000 permittees. Goals include restoring at least 500,000 head months of grazing on National Forest System lands within two years with no net loss of animal unit months, reopening vacant allotments, improving wildfire planning and recovery (including virtual fencing), and streamlining environmental review.
