National Proposes Random Drug Testing for Beneficiaries as Nominations Close With 530 Candidates
New Zealand's National Party proposed on 8 October 2026 to introduce random drug testing for welfare beneficiaries. Stuff reported the policy that day as part of the party's welfare platform; details such as who would be tested, how often, and the consequences of refusing had yet to be fully set out by the party. Opposition parties and beneficiary advocates have historically criticised such policies as stigmatising and short on evidence of effectiveness.
The same day, nominations closed for the general election. Electoral Commission figures show 530 candidates in total are standing, for both electorate and list seats; 61 are list-only candidates, and a further 65 are standing for unregistered parties or as independents. The close of nominations finalises ballot papers and electorate contests across the country.
The election will be held on 7 November under the Mixed Member Proportional system. Polling shows the two main blocs close together, with minor parties likely to decide who forms the government, so each new welfare, law-and-order and cost-of-living policy quickly becomes national news.
The drug-testing proposal will now be examined in parliamentary debate and media fact-checking, with its administration costs and legal workability expected to be scrutinised by opponents and analysts. The Electoral Commission moves on to ballot printing and polling-place preparations.
