President Trump on Oct. 8 presented the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation at a "Science: A New Golden Age of Science" summit at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, the first time he has awarded the nation's top science honors in this term. The National Medal of Science went to Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su. The technology medal went to Dell's Michael Dell and Microsoft's Satya Nadella. For Chinese-American readers, Huang and Su are a notable pairing: the Taiwan-born immigrants who run Nvidia and AMD, the two giants of AI chips, now share a place on the National Medal of Science roll. White House assistant press secretary Liz Houston said the honorees are helping keep the United States at the forefront of global innovation. The ceremony also drew scrutiny of the honorees' political ties.
