Wyandotte County Votes 9-0 to Opt Out of Kansas Sports Authority Act Amid Chiefs Stadium Talks
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, voted 9-0 on Thursday to exempt itself from parts of the state's Sports Authority Act, dealing a procedural blow to the framework for financing a proposed $3 billion Kansas City Chiefs stadium, the Kansas City Star and KCTV reported.
The board passed a charter ordinance and resolution opting out of portions of House Bill 2466, the state law creating the sports authority structure. At the same meeting, commissioners pulled from the agenda — without a vote — an amendment that would have altered local oversight of the stadium financing.
The stadium is proposed for the area around 126th Street and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, with a targeted opening in 2031 and a capacity of about 70,000. Points of contention include the mayor's seat on the authority board, local zoning authority, utility costs and the STAR bond district.
Mayor Christal Watson said the county needs "give and take" with the state to move the project forward. The county has separately sued the state government over the law, and the Chiefs declined to comment.
