FBI Foils Mall of America Attack Plot: Teen Bought Rifle for Festival Shooting
Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that the FBI has arrested Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, of Richfield, Minnesota, accusing him of plotting a mass shooting at the Mall of America — the largest mall in the United States — in support of ISIS. He is charged with knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition to commit a federal crime of terrorism. According to the complaint, Mohamud had been in contact with an FBI source since December 2024. He first wanted to travel abroad to join al-Shabaab or ISIS; when he could not afford the trip, he turned to a domestic attack. He allegedly chose Oct. 24, when the mall hosts a Hmong arts celebration, and said he wanted to kill 30 to 60 non-Muslims. On Oct. 6 he bought an AK-47, four 30-round magazines and about 200 rounds from an undercover agent for $600 and was arrested on the spot. U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen said Mohamud "took substantial steps to plot to murder innocent people in the name of ISIS"; FBI Director Kash Patel said agents stopped the plan before he could act. Mohamud made his first court appearance Wednesday in St. Paul and was ordered held ahead of an Oct. 19 detention hearing. (From DOJ statements and Reuters reporting.)
