Pennsylvania Man Indicted for Taking $68K in Another Person's Social Security Benefits
A federal grand jury has indicted George Grist, 65, of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, for theft of government property. Prosecutors allege that from April 2021 to July 2025 he took more than 50 Social Security benefit payments meant for another person — about $68,048 in total. The case was announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania and investigated by the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General. Grist is the sole defendant; if convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with the actual sentence guided by federal sentencing guidelines. Prosecutors note an indictment is not proof of guilt. The announcement came through the Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division, created in April to focus on benefit fraud.
