Celtics Preseason: Devin Carter Scores 17 in 24 Minutes Against Cavaliers at TD Garden
BOSTON — The Boston Celtics hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA preseason action at TD Garden on October 8. According to Celtics Wire, the night's standout storyline was newcomer guard Devin Carter, who posted 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 24 minutes, playing aggressively at both ends of the floor.
The report noted that Carter also committed 5 turnovers, a sign that ball security remains a work in progress. He signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Boston during the offseason — a short-term, training-camp deal — and whether he sticks with the roster and cracks the regular-season rotation will depend on the rest of his preseason.
Preseason games are the main window for teams to evaluate fringe rotation players and young prospects, and individual performances often matter more to coaching staffs than the final score. As Boston's exhibition schedule continues, fans will be watching whether Carter can build on this outing.
The Celtics are the NBA's most decorated franchise, and TD Garden — shared with the NHL's Boston Bruins — is New England's premier indoor arena. Each preseason, home fans focus on the health of the core rotation and on whether fringe players such as Carter can force their way into the picture. For a player on an Exhibit 10 deal, every appearance is an audition for a standard or two-way contract, and coaches deliberately test such players alongside starters to judge their fit in real sets. Carter's two steals caught the staff's attention on defense, while his five turnovers underlined that his ball-handling decisions must tighten before the faster regular season begins.
