Arizona Court System Breach Exposes Personal Data of 1.3 Million People
The Arizona Supreme Court disclosed on October 7 that the state court system suffered a cyberattack exposing personal information of more than 1.3 million people, the AP and ABA Journal reported on October 8.
The stolen data includes records of unpaid court fees, fines and restitution going back up to 30 years, plus nearly 30,000 protection orders and 150,000 foster care board reports dating to 2010. The breach is believed to have started when an employee clicked a link in a phishing email.
Court officials said the intrusion was discovered September 24 on a backup server and shut down within about two hours. Case proceedings were not affected, and no records were altered or deleted. The compromised data does not include juror, witness or employee information.
"We don't have any evidence it has been used or shared," said court spokesman Alberto Rodriguez. Affected individuals are being notified, and the incident remains under investigation.
