Gov. Lee Grants One-Year Reprieve to Death Row Inmate Gary Sutton
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Gov. Bill Lee on Oct. 7 granted a one-year reprieve to death row inmate Gary Sutton, temporarily halting his scheduled execution and adding another chapter to Tennessee's long-running debate over capital punishment, WVLT reported.
The reprieve pauses the execution for twelve months while the state reviews the case. Sutton has been on Tennessee's death row for decades following his conviction in a 1992 double murder in which prosecutors said he killed an elderly couple during a robbery.
Lee, a Republican in his second term, has previously granted reprieves in death penalty cases, citing the gravity of the decision and the need for careful review. The governor, who has described himself as personally wrestling with the morality of the death penalty, has at times slowed the pace of executions in the state even as he has allowed others to proceed.
Death penalty opponents and supporters alike have closely watched Tennessee's recent handling of capital cases. The state resumed executions in 2018 after a nearly decade-long pause, and several high-profile cases since then have drawn national attention to questions about lethal injection protocols and the fairness of the appeals process.
The governor's office said the reprieve allows time for further proceedings and review. Sutton's attorneys have raised claims about the handling of his case over the years, and advocates said the additional year provides an opportunity for courts to fully consider outstanding legal issues. The reprieve does not overturn the conviction or the death sentence; it only delays the execution date.
